3 amazing day trips you can take from Venice

by admin on July 22, 2015

Venice is on most people’s bucket list and it receives over 60,000 people a day – so it must be good! However there is plenty of places just a short drive from Venice which could be even better than Venice itself – or certainly allow you to extend your stay in Northern Italy. I’ve picked out three places which are within easy reach of everybody’s favourite city.

Bibione
It’s only an hour away from Venice so perfect for a day trip. The biggest draw for Bibione is the beautiful beach. The lovely white sand is perfectly clean and most of all there is plenty of space for everyone. There are lots of bars and restaurants to try out for lunch or dinner including Pizzeria La Fontana, which of course serves delicious pizza! If you can tear yourself away from the beach I would also recommend heading up to the lighthouse Il Faro which is a short bike ride outside the resort. The one thing I would certainly recommend is the yummy gelato shop with plenty of choice and even my favourite flavour – Nutella.

Lake Garda (Dolomites)
Lake Garda is the largest fresh water lake in Italy and it is perfectly located for a day trip away from Venice. There are plenty of things to keep you entertained including loads of watersports like parasailing and wind surfing, both of which I would love to try out. The whole area is picture perfect with plenty of lovely walks up in the mountains around the lake where the views are breath taking! The most popular town to visit is Sirmione where the amazing Rocca Scaligiera castle is – which looks like it’s been ripped from the Game of Thrones set!

Chioggia
This is sometimes referred to as Little Venice and I can see why! It is a small fishing port which really does look like Venice – but it’s a lot cheaper. And even better the pace is a bit slower than Venice. Although it’s smaller there’s plenty to see and do which can make it a perfect get away from the real Venice. I’d recommend visiting the Piazzetta Vigo and bridge which is a great place to take some souvenir snaps along. I would also head to the cathedral which was built in 1110 with a beautiful bell tower.

Have you ever visited Venice or any of the places above? Where else would you go?
