Whether you are planning on getting lots of Christmas shopping done on a weekend away in Wales or are looking forward to a leisurely stroll around some stalls, Wales has plenty in the way of Christmas markets. Some last for a day or two, while others are held over a number of weeks in the run-up to December 25th.
Have a look at the Visit Wales website to find out more or read on for an overview of the best fayres and markets across the country.
Cardiff Christmas Market – November 14th to December 23rd
Being the capital of Wales, it is not surprising that Cardiff leads the way in terms of its Christmas market. The whole of the Hayes and St John Street comes alive from mid-November right the way through to December 23rd.
Sweet wooden cabins are erected to give the impression of being in a continental setting – in the Alps or Germany perhaps – with wonderful smells wafting towards visitors. Each of these venues is a treasure trove of festive treats, including delicious food and drink and potential gifts.
Many of the items on sale reflect Welsh heritage, so your presents will be truly unique this year. How about a love spoon for your significant other? Each one is carved by hand and the different motifs symbolise elements of your relationship.
Alternatively, pick up something for the house or garden crafted out of exquisite Welsh slate. There is also pewter and silver jewellery, toys, photography and a wide selection of decorations – everything you need for the festive season.
Cardiff Bay Christmas Market – December 6th to 8th
Another Christmas fayre found in the capital, this offering down at Roald Dahl Plass is held over a weekend and offers more entertainment options than the long-running option in the city centre. You can still enjoy the food and craft stalls, but take part in other activities too.
There will be carol singing and brass bands in the bandstand, as well as funfair rides to keep the kids entertained. You can learn how to make some decorations and presents of your own at the crafting workshops or interact with the street performers.
Holidaymakers can even get involved in a Guinness World Record attempt by simply pulling a Christmas cracker. The Fire Fighters Charity will be synchronising volunteers as they try to pull the biggest number of crackers in one go ever achieved.
Swansea Christmas Street Market – November 29th to December 22nd
If you are not in Cardiff between now and Christmas, you may get the chance to visit Swansea, which has a great market too. Taking up residence on Oxford Street, the stalls are open daily between 10am and 5pm, then later on Thursdays when they don’t close until 8pm.
Pick up all your Christmas essentials and handmade items from the surrounding area with a choice of over 40 stalls. For the first time this year there will also be a huge snow globe that you can climb inside and have your photo taken as a family.
Erdigg Christmas Market – November 23rd to December 15th
Those holidaying in North Wales will not miss out either as this stunning National Trust property will be hosting Christmas stalls in the run-up to the big day. Erdigg House offers a glimpse of traditional Victorian celebrations with plenty of things to buy.
Browse the stalls and take a peek inside the mansion’s kitchens as the preparations are underway. Then warm your hands with a glass of mulled wine and some freshly roasted chestnuts.
