Cultural Experiences to Enjoy in Rome

by admin on March 29, 2017

Rome is a wonderful city. It has a lot to offer visitors, especially those who are culture lovers. Over the centuries, Rome has been the power base of several important rulers.

Many of those rulers spent a lot of money on building a legacy for themselves, so the city is full of iconic buildings including spectacular theatres, galleries and museums. In Rome, you can enjoy art, theatre and music at some truly wonderful venues. It does not really matter what cultural experience you seek, as you will see, you can find it in this marvellous city.

The Maxxi for modern art lovers

For modern art lovers a visit to the Maxxi, which is also known as the National Museum of the 21st Century Arts, is essential. There is always something new to enjoy at this contemporary art gallery.

This ultra-modern gallery has canvases and prints by William Kentridge and Kara Walker as well as photographs by Vanessa Beecroft and the work of many other modern artists. It is a particularly good place to visit if you are like video art installations because they regularly host this type of art.

The Borghese Gallery

If you prefer traditional art, the Borghese Gallery is a better option. This spectacular building is home to some beautiful sculptures, including the sublime Apollo and Daphne.

It really does not matter what type of art you like you can find it on display in one of Rome’s seven large art galleries.

The museums and monuments of Rome

The city also has more than forty museums and monuments that you can visit and enjoy. Again, there is plenty of choice, everything from traditional, dusty museums to quaint bizarre or quirky small museums.

A National Museum of Rome ticket gives you access to displays spread across four different sites. Each building is full of important paintings, sculptures and interesting historical items.

If you want to experience something a little less traditional, The National Pasta Museum is a great option. This quirky little museum tells the story of pasta in an interesting way that many visitors enjoy. If you like quirky museums, a visit to the Criminal Museum is also worth adding to your itinerary.

Experiencing opera in Rome

For opera lovers, Rome is a wonderful place. There are two lovely opera houses in the city for you to enjoy. During the summer months, you can often enjoy an open-air performance in the spectacular surroundings of the Baths of Caracalla.

Luckily, Rome opera tickets are not expensive, but they tend to sell out fast. Therefore, if you want to enjoy an opera while visiting Rome, it is wise to book in advance.

A night at the theatre

The city of Rome is also home to some very good theatre companies. Of course, most of the performances are in Italian. However, there is the chance to enjoy shows in English as well. The English Theatre of Rome and Rome’s version of The Globe Theatre both put on English language productions.  You can find out more about these by clicking this link.
