As far as city breaks go, Cyprus is pretty underrated. It’s usually the beaches and coastline of this stunning island that get all the attention. You’ll rarely find a piece of travel writing on Cyprus that doesn’t contain the phrase, “clear crystal waters” or an equivalent.
So this time, we’re moving away from the beach resorts and their associated cliches. Get ready for a city adventure – for an experience unlike any other. Whether you choose to explore the cosmopolitan Lefkosia, the palm-lined Larnaca or historic Pathos, you’ll find an absolute plethora of attractions to fully justify your flight to Cyprus. More info on flights can be found here and read below about the metropolises below to see if you can resist the temptation.
Paphos
Paphos is located at the western end of Cyprus. Nestled among mountains and forests, the surrounding scenery is stunning. Perhaps the best way to experience the panoramic views is to grab a horse from one of the many stables offering such a service, and set off on a bridle path. Other must-do activities including visiting Kato Paphos Archaeological Park and surveying the intricate mosaics, or else taking in the atmosphere at the famous Ayios Neophytos Monastery. For a brilliant wildlife experience though, you can’t beat watching the turtles frolic at the Lara Bay Turtle Conservation Station.
Lemesos
Known to most Brits as Limassol, people come to this extraordinary port city to observe its extensive cultural traditions. Visit at two different times of the year and you’ll find it completely changed due to its many festivals. Carnival sets the atmosphere alight, with plenty of buzz and excitement. The wine festival brings an air of class and sophistication, but it’s the ballet festival that’s often considered the highlight of the arts calendar. Even if you visit during a quiet period on the culture front, there’s a plethora of museums and art galleries to explore. Get over to the sculpture park or the Cyprus Theatre Museum for a learning experience.
Lefkosia
A city of many names (the locals call it Nicosia, Lefkosa or Lefkosia), there is plenty to discover in the Cyprus capital. Aside from bearing the dubious honour of being the world’s last divided metropolis, it’s also known for being a truly vibrant and cosmopolitan holiday destination. As attractions go, it’s worth embracing the divided nature of the city and doing the Green Line Walk. Be sure to stop off at the highly traditional Zanettos Taverna, one of the oldest watering holes in the city, before paying a visit to the superb Venetian Walls that surround the city.
Larnaca
Head to the southern coast of Cyprus to explore Larnaca’s glittering nightlife, varied cafes and excellent shopping hotspots. This is entertainment central – shop until you drop during the afternoo
