by admin on May 27, 2016

Berlin has always been a city that’s popular with tourists, the well-connected airport making it a very easy long-weekend location from almost anywhere in Europe. However in recent years, people have taken to the city so much that many foreigners have made the move to call it home.

It’s become particularly popular with younger professionals types who are drawn in by the lively nightlife, cafe culture and thriving creative and artistic scene. Berlin is a place where anybody, no matter your interests or background, can find a place where they’ll fit in and flourish.

This influx of people has created a very diverse city and allowed Berlin to develop under a number of influences. Nowhere is this more visible than in the cities drinking scene, you’ll find bars catering for all tastes and needs, making it still one of the best weekend getaways in Europe.

Prater Biergarten

Open between April and September every year, this is the oldest beer garden in Berlin. The first punters enjoyed a beer here under the shade of the trees right back in 1837. There is seating for 600 people and with no reservations, it’s a case of turning up and squeezing into a spot.

The beer selection here is plentiful and you’ll find impressive home-brewed beer as well as many other local options. You’ll be glad to know there is also a lot of good hearty German food available to help soak up all that beer.

Aufsturz

This popular place doubles as a gallery and as such can pull in quite a trendy crowd. However, Thanks to the hostel located right next door you’ll also find people from all around the world enjoying something from the menu. And what a menu it is, Aufsturz offers a choice of over 100 beers.

Weekends can get busy so make sure to arrive early, especially during the winter months when there isn’t the extra outdoor seating. Remember your glasses, that menu is going to take some reading.

Barbie Dienhoff’s

So perhaps you’ve been to the two bars mentioned above, had a few tasty drinks and now you’re feeling a little adventurous. Even the most out-there of your friends will find their first experience of Barbie Dienhoff’s a little strange. The bright pink theme immediately creates an interesting vibe but it’s the mix of people that really makes this place stand out.

You’ll rub shoulders with everyone from artists, students, intellectuals, cross-dressers and undoubtedly other tourists wondering what on earth they have walked into. There is nothing to fear here however and diving into the impressive cocktail menu will soon have you forgetting why you were so nervous.
