Let’s be honest, the list of countries on my ‘must visit next’ list is up to about twenty now. Some of those may never happen, others will be replaced and forgotten about but hopefully most will be ticked off in the not too distant future.
A couple of years ago we started noticing a steady stream of travel bloggers visiting Iceland and with their exposure came more and more reasons to visit the country. While it may have already been in the back of our minds their posts definitely helped cement Iceland as a place we needed to explore.
Since then I’ve been collating a mental list of the ‘must-do’ items for when we finally make it to Iceland.
My Iceland Bucket LIst
Road Trip
After our drive across Europe to Romania we’ve now got a bit of a taste for road-trips and by that I mean I’m not scared of driving on the right-hand side of the road any more.
Having the freedom of your own transport in a new country opens up a whole new world of opportunity. A Self drive Iceland Tour with the option to stop whenever you want and take pictures sounds like the perfect idea, especially with the scenery Iceland has to offer.
The Northern lights
My mum has been obsessed with the idea of seeing the northern lights for as long as I can remember, for that reason I am determined that in the not too distant future we shall see them together.
Iceland has a few options for seeing the northern lights and with so many other things already attracting me to the country, seeing the northern lights could bring a perfect end to an action packed trip.
Diving Silfra
Now we’re living in a large capital city diving locally isn’t really an option for us. That means that at least half of our trips away need to include some time underwater, so we can get our fix.
Diving in Iceland and particularly Silfra has been on my list for a long time and is ultimately the reason that Iceland appeals to me so much – it’s the original reason for taking an interest in the country.
There are two reasons why the diving here interests me so much. One, the Silfra Fissure is the only place in the world you can dive between continental plates (yes you read that right). Secondly, the visibility is usually 100+ metres which is just amazing, that’s like diving in glass clear water.
We’ve dived in some great locations in the last couple of years but this would have to be right up there.
Volcanic Hot Spring
Iceland is famous for it’s volcanic hot springs and it’s almost impossible to choose between them. The idea of touring the country to find their best hot spring doesn’t sound like the worst job in the world – my only problem would be where to start?
Have you been to any hot springs in Iceland? Perhaps you can help me choose between them?
Ice Caves of Vatnajökull Glacier
I’m not sure how I’d even comprehend being near let alone in something as huge and powerful as the Vatnajökull Glacier but the chance to see the incredible natural formations of the ice caves is something that I couldn’t pass up.
The chance to explore these ice caves is probably my joint top reason for wanting to visit Iceland, the pictures that come out of the caves are stunning and I’d love to experience it for myself.
Whale watching in Húsavík
With our love of diving comes our interest in the wildlife below the waves. Whale watching off the coast of Húsavík offers the chance to see Humpback, Minke and Blue whales regularly.
During the summer months it’s predicted that there is a 95 percent rate across all whale watching tours, that’s an incredibly high figure when dealing with wild animals. With odds like that why wouldn’t you go? You can find out more about the town here.
So my only question after writing this is – Kirsty? When can we visit Iceland?
Have you been to Iceland and have something that should make it on to my bucket list? I’d love to hear from you
