Our 2017 Travel Resolutions (Travelutions?)

“This is our year” is something I usually only ever say when I’m talking about my football team at the start of a new season. I’ve never really been one for making promises to myself at the start of a new year, usually because I don’t want to deal with the shame of failing.

If you are one of those ‘New Year, New Me’ people though, take a look at this and plan to break your resolutions in style. It gave me the idea to write out some ‘Travelutions’, some simple reminders to myself about what I can do to have an even better year of travel in 2017.

Don’t Delay

I’m in no way disappointed with the amount of travel we did in 2016 but there was the opportunity to do more. We had a few days spare here and there where we considered booking a short trip away, however for whatever reason we never got round to planning anything and the chance passed us by.

Our goal this year will be to snatch at these moments. As soon as we realise we have the time we’ll get online and book somewhere to stay, forcing ourselves into action and planning a few days away.

Visit Home More

Living in  Bucharest we’re very lucky that budget airlines fly regularly between here and England. Our friends and family have taken great advantage of this and it’s rare we’ve had a month to ourselves in 18 months of living here.

The problem? We haven’t made the journey in reverse much at all. I like going home, I get itchy feet after being there for too long but flying visits are a lot of fun. We should really make the effort to repay the ones we love by visiting them at home too. 2017 will be the year we fly home more.

Get Our Camp On

We’ve been fortunate enough to stay in some amazing campsites in Austria, Slovenia, Hungary and Romania but I’d still love to do more. Our camping trips have typically been done in the middle of summer although with far more reliable weather this side of Europe, our camping trips should be much more frequent.

There’s a fair bit of wild camping goes on in Romania and I’ve already spotted a great deserted beach where a few people were set up that looks perfect.

Pre-Book More

An American in Vietnam once said to us:

“Whenever I ask English people what they’re up to they always say ‘just wandering’ what is that? WHERE ARE YOU GOING?”.

We ourselves are very guilty of this and often plan hardly anything before arriving at a new destination. We just wander around and more often than not it rewards us greatly however, there are certain occasions when a bit of forward planning would help us enjoy somewhere a little more. 2017 is the year we start researching and planning more for new destinations to make the most of our time.
