Outdoor Activities in Jamaica

by admin on June 6, 2012

Grotty backpackers looking for herbal refreshments, glamorous supermodels looking to catch some rays, and smart young couples heading off on Honeymoon: you see people from all walks of life on flights to Jamaica.

And it’s no wonder: the sunny weather, laid back locals and long stretches of white sandy beaches are enough to keep anyone happy: whether they found cheap flights or not. It would be a shame to waste your time indoors- a trip to the Caribbean is once in a lifetime for some- so take time out of your busy schedule of lazing about to enjoy the multitude of outdoor activities Jamaica has to offer.

Horse riding tours

Although you can hire jeeps to tour the island, a much more romantic and back to basics way to do things is on horseback. There are lots of companies in Jamaica offering such tours: even a few that offer you the chance to gallop along the beach, as if you were in a cheesy 1990s pop video. Roaming through plantation grounds, your guide will give you a brief history lesson. Don’t miss the chance to go horseback riding in the ocean.

Zipline

Don’t be put off by the recent South Park episode; ziplining is actually a fun way to spend an afternoon. Soaring through the jungle canopy, this isn’t for the faint hearted (or anyone with a slight fear of heights). Be sure to choose a reputable company, as safety is important. Be sure to refuel afterwards with some fresh coconut water and pineapple juice.

Hiking in the Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains are gorgeous, and there are loads of trails that you can take through the nature reserve: from the challenging (serious hikers only need apply) to the picturesque, you’re likely to be whipping your iPhone out at every Instagram opportunity that presents itself. And that will be often. Mountain rules apply: no matter how hot the weather is, be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring warm waterproofs. As you ascend the weather can become somewhat unpredictable, and it’s best to be prepared.

Black River Safari

Sure, the beach is nice, but if you really want to spend some time near the water it’s worth seeking out the Black River safaris. Come almost face to face with crocodiles as you get a tour of the interior of the island. Your guide talks you through Jamaica’s breath-taking flora and fauna as you see it: from tropical birds to twisted mangrove trees. If you love getting off the beaten track, then you’ll love this. Top tip: wait for a sunny day, as crocodiles are more likely to be out and about sunning themselves. If you’re scared of crocs then wait until it’s a bit overcast!

That’s just the tip of the iceberg: Jamaica is the perfect place to get involved in water sports for the first time, or play a leisurely game of golf (there are around 11 courses on the island). Or you could simply take part in the best outdoor activity of all: sunbathing, with a nice rum cocktail.
