Saudi Arabia is a popular destination in the Middle East. Visitors who enjoy being beside the sea are spoilt for choice as this country is next to three stretches of ocean, the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. The resorts are renowned for their luxury hotels, many of which have their own private beach where residents can make the most of the sea and the sand without being disturbed.
Temperature
Be prepared for very high temperatures because summer temperatures are well over one hundred degrees Fahrenheit. Coastal and mountain areas tend to be a little cooler, but you can still expect to be basking in temperatures of around one hundred degrees. Those who enjoy more moderate temperatures may prefer to visit during the cooler winter period when daytime temperatures are a very pleasant seventy degrees, although it can be very chilly at night.
Getting there
These days, it is very easy to get a flight to many areas in Saudi Arabia. Several regional airports have regular flights and there are direct flights from Heathrow Airport, you are able to use Heathrow Express to get to the Heathrow Airport then to Dammam, Jeddah and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. Considering that it is over three thousand miles from London to Saudi Arabia, it only takes six hours to get there, which is a fairly manageable flight for most people.
Things to do in Jeddah
The Red Sea is well known for scuba diving and it is one of the most popular diving destinations in the world. There are diving schools in and around Jeddah that can provide equipment, lessons and tours. Because under water visibility often stretches to one hundred feet, it is possible to see stunning reefs and all kinds of marine life ranging from dolphins to rays. The area is especially suitable for beginners as the water is warm and generally very calm. For those who prefer to look at water than spend time in it, try to see the King’s Fountain which can reach over a thousand feet on a still day. Worth seeing at night too, when it is illuminated.
Things to do in Riyadh
Masmak Citadel is a fort in Riyadh which has lots of historic exhibits (including explanations in English) and it is an ideal place to get an overview of Saudi Arabian history. Nearby, is the infamous Dirah Square where public punishments are meted out each Friday. On a more cheerful note, Old Dir’aiyah is steeped in Arabian history and you can see the remains of palaces. For fans of more modern architecture, Riyadh is home to the unmissable Kingdom Centre Tower which dominates the Riyadh skyline. The viewing bridge on top of the building offers vertigo-inducing panoramic views of the city and the desert and there’s a café on the 77th floor so you can relax while taking in the stunning views. For those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground, the Centre also houses a shopping mall with many major-name shops.
