Getting Started in Catalonia, Spain

by admin on November 25, 2015

Spain has always been one of the big players when it comes to choosing your summer holiday destination and the region of Catalonia plays a huge part in drawing tourists back to the country every year.

Located in the north-east of Spain, Catalonia, is known just as much for it’s golden sandy beaches as it is for the stunning green towering mountains of the Pyrenees. That’s not forgetting the regions capital of Barcelona, which is not only one of the most interesting cities in Europe but home to one of the world’s most famous football teams with huge global support.

If you’ve decided it’s time you explored this wonderful area of the world then here are a few ideas of where you might start your journey. The region is easily accessible by air with several airports to choose from and companies like atlastransfers.com will make sure you arrive at your destination quickly.

While Costa Brava is famous for it’s beaches there is also much more to see and do in the area if sunbathing isn’t your thing. The city of Girona is a historians dream with old quarter remaining the centre of town and still following the walls of the ancient Roman city.

If this sounds like your sort of thing then you’ll find no shortage of stunning architecture and sights soaked in history.

The town can’t be visited without taking a moment to admire the cathedral of Girona, arguably one of the most important Gothic monuments in the area. There’s also the Jewish Quarter, The Galligants and of course perhaps the biggest attraction the arab baths.

Lloret de Mar

If the above all sounds like a bit too much work and you’re looking for a more traditional summer holiday then look no further than Lloret de Mar.

Mass tourism is what keeps this place alive. Large hotels, endless restaurants and bars and lively clubs mean you’ll have no problem spending a week or two relaxing on the beach in the sun during the day and partying the night away as the sun sets. Lloret de Mar is a home away from home where you’ll have access to everything you could possibly need.

Tossa de Mar

If you’re looking for more of a middle ground, a mixture of culture and history but you still want the chance to relax in the sun for a few hours on the beach then take a look at Tossa de Mar.

This medieval town dates right back to the year 996 and its castle, which was built on the hillside over looking the beach to defend against sea borne invaders, was built in 1187.

Thankfully these days Tossa de Mar doesn’t have many invaders and instead offers a wonderful retreat for couples and families looking for a holiday in the sun with a little something different. A truly beautiful town that has it all.

These are just a few options to get you started in Catalonia. The region has much more to offer and once you’ve visited once we’re sure it won’t be long before you’re back again to see more.
