Random Traveller #38
Who are you?
I am Alexandra Kovacova. I was born in Slovakia when it was still Czechoslovakia which is maybe the only thing that comes to the mind of people when they hear my nationality. I’m 26 years old and I started traveling when I was still a child. It was with my parents, a lot of frequent trips all over my country – Bratislava, Košice, High Tatras, lakes etc., plus many trips to Poland and Hungary, too. I loved that already when little. When 18, I moved to Czech Republic to study at the University. I spent there 5 years and as I studied English and Spanish philology, I had a passion in everything that has to do with all the countries where they speak these 2 languages. I spent 5 months in Madrid and a month in Malaga in 2005 (Erasmus scholarship) and every summer spent on Spanish beaches. The last 2 years I worked as a cabin crew for an Irish airline and travel became not only the reason of my life during my free time, but as well my job.
For the last 7 years and a half I lived abroad (in 5 different European countries) and have been going to Slovakia only for holidays. Though I still consider the little town Snina in the East Slovakia as the place I call home.
What’s the deal?
One of my vices is I am a night owl, or should I call it a strong insomniac? I spent a lot of nights thinking how to use my time effectively and one day in September 2010 I decided to start writing a travel blog. So here I come. I have to say that my biggest inspiration was Nomadic Matt. I was wondering which name I should give to the blog but the only proper thing that occurred to me was the way people were calling me for a long time. So that’s me Crazy Sexy Fun Traveler. I want to inspire people and show them our planet is a wonderful place to live in. There is so much to see! I only write about places where I have been to and things I have experienced myself and to give people some tips to have a better travel life. I’m glad I’ve had only great response to what I’m doing.
When did the travel bug first grab hold of you?
Like I said, already in early childhood. I am so grateful to my parents, mostly to my dad for passing on me the passion for travel and photography. My dad used to be a professional photographer and a painter so I remember we used to have millions of photos and images at home and I admired their different colours (he loved silver and gold) since then. Now I know I travel to live, I live to travel.
Can you name a single experience you’ve had that sums up why you love to travel so much?
Oh yes, that’s a story! There was one trip that made me realize I so love to travel. It was a year after my lovely brother died and my parents divorced, in summer 2007 when I really needed something to forget about the pain and find some balance in my life again. I planned a trip to Barcelona (the city I love the most) and was meant to stay over in a friend’s house there. But the night before my flight there he texted me he was falling in love with me and it would be really painful for him to let me go after the 3 weeks in Barcelona with him, so he apologized and left to Ibiza with his sister to forget about me. Everyone was trying to convince me not to go to Barcelona then but I did anyway. I came there without any accommodation booked, just had the return ticket after 3 weeks. I found a hostel and stayed there all the 20 days and had an unforgettable time with other travelers and the people working at the hostel. I put my life together spending days at the beach and visiting all the historical sights of this awesome Gaudi’s city. That was THE trip when I found myself and understood I am here to travel.
What’s the plan for 2011 and beyond (if you can look that far ahead)
A difficult question. Now the big change comes for me. Probably the biggest one so far in my life, which I decided myself and it was not an idea or a command from someone else. I quit my job (actually now it is my last couple of days working) and I go to Mexico on the 10th of March to travel at least for 3 months (because of the visa). The big secret is I am starting with a project to promote Mexico culture and attract more tourism there in exchange of free accommodation and tours from hotels and travel agencies. It looks promising and I hope it is going to work out for me. Follow my adventures in Mexico at www.crazysexyfuntraveler.com.
And then? I leave it open… maybe I find a great job in Mexico, or I move to a different country, or spend some time at home with my family… no one knows. I just want to live in the present and enjoy my new experience. What I’m sure of, though, is, that my future is going to be about travel and only travel.
A big thanks to Alexandra for taking part, great to have you.
