The Bucket List Fail

Seeing as we like to brag about all the wonderful things we’ve done over the years we’ve already gone ahead and reviewed all the things we managed to tick off our original bucket list.

Now it’s time for a reality check and take a look at the bits we didn’t manage to tick off and more importantly why the hell not!

Wind surfing – I have to be honest and say I completely forgot about this one, it’s something I would still love to try/learn but I can’t actually remember seeing anyone windsurfing. Do people windsurf in SE Asia?

Cave swimming – We visited plenty of caves while we were away, from crawling through smaller ones in Ha Long Bay Vietnam to huge mansion like caves in the mountains surrounding Chiang Mai.  Unfortunately none of those gave us the chance to swim in a proper cave pool.

Road biking – It’s not really something that interested Kirsty at the time (she could be more tempted now) and the heat was of course an issue.  Even after nearly two years in South East Asia I’m not sure I could have handled any long distance cycling.

See what we can swap each other for in each country – This was ridiculous and I have no idea what it was doing on our list

Jump on a train and see where it takes us – We ended up choosing destinations very last minute based on whatever we fancied doing at the time but we never completely winged it.  I guess the biggest reason for never completing this one was budget, although we never had a strict budget plan, spending money on a journey we regretted would have been very frustrating.

Couchsurf in every country – This one was more than achievable and we should have really made more of an effort to make it happen.  Meeting people in backpacker hostels was great but I’m sure couchsurfing would have added a whole different feel to visiting somewhere.

Sleep on a beach – We slept on beaches countless times but never overnight, instead we’d fall asleep on the sand, under the baking sun and wake up looking like lobsters. Our perfect nights sleep on the beach under the stars is still there to be ticked off, maybe we’ll just have to bury all our belongings in the sand for the night while we sleep?

On the whole we did more than we ever dreamed of while we were away, some of the best moments of our trip wouldn’t have even crossed our minds back in August 2010. Next time we go away we probably won’t even bother with a list, hopefully we’ll tick a few of these remaining points off but most of it will remain an open book.

To find out where that next adventure is you’ll have to stay tuned – we hope to be able to reveal more soon!

Is there anything on your bucket list that you should have ticked off by now but haven’t got round to?

Well you guys did a good job and you still have some stuff on your list for your next adventure..wherever that is 🙂 I actually don’t keep a bucket list. I completely understand why people do, but it’s not for me. I have many places to go and things to try floating around in my mind though. 🙂

Thanks Joella – The bucket list was written on a bit of a whim before we left and I’m not sure we ever even referred to it while we were away. Nonetheless it was interesting to see what we managed to tick off along the way!

Nice – we’ve got a sort of bucket list (100 things list) that we’re trying to bump up to 100 things and at the same time I’m stuck shaking my head at why we put a few of them on there in the first place (like your “see what we can swap each other in each country one” I guess). Maybe I’ll have to do a similar post one day but I think our outtakes might be worse than yours (a bit tempting to just delete them and amend with much cooler sounding options!).

I have to be honest and say we came very close to deleting a few of the points through embarrassment but it’s done now. I hope you achieve all your 100 things including the weird ones!

I started having a bucket list when I was 23. Few people know that I have a list but they have no idea what’s in there. I just don’t wanna share it. I’m afraid it won’t happen. :))

Playing it safe, maybe if you share them you might feel more pressure to work your way though them? Unless they are really strange? Might be best to keep them secret in that case…

If I remember everything correctly, windsurfing can be done in Taal Lake, Batangas, Boracay or El Nido, Palawan. The couple at Goats on the Road borrowed a mosquito net and slept underneath the stars in an uninhabited island in Palawan.

There’s a pool in Hinagdanan Cave in Bohol or you can choose some other caves in the Philippines. You can ride a bike in the rural areas in the Philippines while a train ride is possible from Manila down to Naga, in the southern part of Luzon.

Hope you’ll be able tick off a lot more items on your bucket list.
